Waterline at Yagan Square

‘Waterline’ is a series of water experiences sculpted in Western Australian granite running through Yagan Square. The feature is made up of a sequence of connected elements – from a water ‘source’ at the Playscape where water appears, bubbling up around a sculpted egg-like rock – and then cascades past the Amphitheatre, garden and grassed terraces.

Hear Jon speak about Yagan Square:

“Dr Jonathan Tarry ‘Artist’ in collaboration with Aspect Studios, Lyons Architects, IPH Architects, Landscape Architects, Hook Architects, the Whadjuk Working Group, Urban Stone, Doric and MRA resulted in the creation of ‘Waterline’ at Yagan Square Perth Western Australia 2018. The concept is, water wears stone over time, while drawing on the deep ecology of water systems in the area and the importance in sustaining aspects of life.

Two hundred metres of individually carved stone moves between a distinct formal language of urban edge, steps, pathways, walls and expanse of landscape forms of gardens, planted terrain, playscapes and pools of reflection. The project is an example of the success of creative minds, dynamic designers and skilled professionals working with primary materials and the prosaic of constructing culturally sustainable environments.

The artist will talk about the collaborative methodology informing ‘Waterlines’, each stage of translation, from the raw quarry to skilled manufacture, install realisation and public response.”
